Our History
In 1976 Scott Shepherd and his mates started to ride their Dragsters
on an
unused block of land near his father’s car yard.
The boys got ideas about jumping, racing and doing tricks from the pictures
they saw in magazines from America where
BMX had already begun.
They started to transform the block of land into a bit of a track using tyres, planks of wood and
dirt
to build jumps. Before too long Scott and his mates acquired their first BMX parts
and fitted them to their Dragsters.
One of the first parts were Skyway Nylon Tuff Wheels.
In 1977 Blair Shepherd – (Scott’s Father - Brisbane Businessman / Entrepreneur / Speedcar Driver)
saw his son’s enthusiasm
for this new sport and his business eye saw the potential of something bigger.
He persuaded the council and get permission
to transform the vacant block of land in Earle St Windsor
into a proper BMX track.
The “Youth Cycle Centre”, as it was originally known, was born.
This of course soon acquired the name “Windsor BMX Track” in Earle St. and was Queensland’s first official BMX Track.
1978 Blair took his family on a trip to USA - of course Blair and Scott had BMX at the forefront in their minds for this trip.
They were lucky enough to come across a BMX Race meeting near Anaheim and here they not only got to see how
the meetings were run and what the tracks were like. Blair also introduced himself to
the late Howie Cohen (Everything Bicycles),
Linn Kastan (Redline), Skip Hess Snr (Mongoose) and Chuck Raudman (Skyway).
Through these meeting Blair decided that perhaps BMX bikes and parts could be a business – not just a sport.
The company – BMX Promotions Pty Ltd was born.
In 1979 Sales Manager Bill DeMaid started with Blair and Scott enabling our business to thrive and grow over the past 4 decades.
BMX Promotions Pty Ltd promoted the sport of BMX and imported bikes, parts and accessories.
It grew from strength to strength
over the years - selling to bicycle shops all around Australia.
As the years progressed, BMX Promotions expanded by stocking more and more products,
requiring larger premises/warehouse and employed more Staff.
In 1996, with the end of promoting the sport of BMX Racing, (this was now done by BMX Australia),
we had a name change to our current name, BMX International Pty Ltd to reflect our new business focus.
From then on we have moved onwards and upwards in our endeavours to support
our customers and provide a continuity of supply of quality, sort after products.
BMX is our passion and for 40years it has been out total existence.
The Owners and staff of BMX International would like to thank all our existing and former suppliers,
customers, and riders for their continued support and friendship on this journey.
Without this support we would not be here today.
